The Orange County Zoo
(and a fire update!)
On this day last year we visited the Orange County Zoo in Santa Ana, CA. We were wondering why it was so incredibly cheap, and then we got there and realized how bad it sucked. There are about 20 monkeys and a camel. That's about it. So mainly we walked around and played on the cement animals.
High Park Fire update:
Ok, so this damn fire is relentless. This weekend's record breaking high temperatures, combined with extremely low single digit humidity, and 50 mph winds stoked the fire so bad, the smoke basically drove us out of the house. Here's what we saw out our back porch yesterday. Keep in mind, there was not a cloud in the sky. Everywhere else was as blue as the Oyster Cult. This is just pure ash and smoke. Perhaps this will give you an idea of what we're dealing with here on the Front Range:
The reason for all this new smoke? The fire grew even larger to 58,046 acres and went from 45% to 25% containment. Not awesome. Part of that was the fact that air attack was nearly completely grounded due to the intensely aggressive winds. In addition, the newest fire on the block, the Springer Fire (about an hour the opposite direction from us) grew to more than 300 acres. We're being bombarded from all sides here.
The National Weather Service has placed us in red flag, high fire danger through 9pm tonight stating "extreme heat, low humidity and gusty, westerly winds will combine Monday to stoke the Colorado wildfires, creating difficult and even more potentially dangerous conditions for firefighters. Conditions will be favorable for rapid growth of existing wildfire and new fire starts."
They placed a state wide ban on fireworks this year. Lame sauce.
